Restaurants in Des Moines?

  • Aug. 19th, 2008 at 2:01 PM
I'm dropping my sister off at college tomorrow and my parents and I will be going out to dinner and having breakfast the next morning somewhere in the area. I've checked happycow and it lists a place that looks great for breakfast but not anything for dinner that doesn't include a review about waitstaff not wanting to make a meal without fish sauce at a Vietnamese restaurant.
Does anyone know the area well enough to recommend a good place for dinner? Thanks!

Soy yogurt!

  • Aug. 19th, 2008 at 9:01 AM
I'm a big fan of strawberry soy yogurt for breakfast with some granola (yum) and picked up a bunch a couple of days ago from Whole Foods. Only prob was that the expiration date is the 18th.

How long does soy yogurt last past expiration date? I know that soy milk can last a few weeks or so, but was curious to know if soy yogurt would go bad quickly or not.

Thanks!

Video game to the Movies.

This is my first post, and let me just say how happy I am to find a place like this and to see it has so many members. I'm just like *_*

But sadly it's not on a good note as I have found out awhile ago they are making a live action movie of one of my fave combat games, Tekken. I have followed the series and being completely addict to the story lines [and Lee Choalan] with great art and amazing endless combonations I end up learning something new every bloody time I play the game. That in itself is pretty epic considering the usual  triangle, square, up, up combo.... yes imma dork.

I was like ohhh they are making a movie? This will be very interesting! until.... dun dun dunnnn yes... I seen the cast. T.T

Luke Goss as Steve Fox.... excuse me while I sob.

*twitch*

luke )

=/  I'm disappointed .... because I thought that this guy would be such a great steve!

This guy )
*Swoons*

Oh well I guess we'll see how things work out, he might make a great Steve even though he doesn't remotly remind me of him xD, at least Anna Williams wont be a complete loss. xD

PoP film

  • Aug. 19th, 2008 at 7:35 AM
So I remember some time ago, back when I first joined this community, I made a post about hearing about Disney buying the rights to Prince of Persia in order to create a film and asked if anyone had more information and people went, "pfffff, they're never going to start working on that movie, get over it."

Well, here for your viewing pleasure, I bring photos of Jake Gyllenhaal on set as the Prince.

Anybody have more information now?

I'm not so sure about him but it seems like there will be lots and lots of gratuitous shirtless action which I'm sure some of you can appreciate. :)

Why Animals Are Better Than You.

My brother sent me this video and I got a laugh out of it. So here it is, because we can all use a smile and a bit of dicking around.

WHY ANIMALS ARE BETTER THAN YOU.

Hi, I just have a quick question.
My skin has been breaking out pretty badly lately and I was wondering if there were any vegan products out there that are good for acne. I'm looking for things like face wash to use in the shower and some sort of astringent. I seem to be having a lot of difficulty though. I'm also running out of shampoo and conditioner, and I didn't really enjoy what I had, so any new suggestions are welcome. I live in a dorm and really only have a grocery store and a mall at my disposal for anything like this. My school has a horrible habit of losing mail too, so buying online is not really an option. Anyway, any help is very much appreciated! God Bless.

ready, steady, cook

  • Aug. 19th, 2008 at 3:00 PM
Today on Ready, Steady, Cook (shut up. yes I watch it. I'm sick, leave me alone) there was a VEGAN. ooooh. though her sister brought on salmon and cheese, and of course had a dessert that had cream and ice-cream. oy.

and the sister said that she makes desserts, but her vegan sister can't eat any of it. naaaaw, that shows how loving you are.
oh, and at the end when they swap sides and try each others' food, I was like "she can't eat any of her sisters' animal-dripped food!"

wouldn't you know it, most people voted for the non-vegan's food. grrrr.

but, this means that they do in fact have vegans on the show. I wanted to go on it before so I could be like "RARRR VEGAN IS GREAT!" and now that I know they've had a vegan on, maybe I could go on. and I'd bring along my (vegan) SO and so the audience would have to vote for a vegan meal. muhahahahahahahahhaaaaa.

oh, and also the host said that vego meals take longer to make. o rly? It really just depends on what you're cooking.

and the host said that he was vegetarian for 5 years (he mentions it every time a veg*n comes on the show). I just cannot fathom why he's so anti-veg, and saying he used to be vego doesn't give him any brownie points. oh, you used to have morals, but you gave them up for some tasty bacon. yep, I so admire you!

Brownies from the box

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 10:42 PM
Twice this week I have attempted to make brownies out of the box and replace the eggs with applesauce. (I use 1/4 cup applesauce for 1 egg)
Both times the brownies come out as a pan full as an oily chocolate mess! Obviously this is not working, does anyone have advice for my failed attempts at making chocolate goodness?
 Thanks in advance!

Any vegan pre-vet or vet students out there?

  • Aug. 19th, 2008 at 12:24 AM
I was wondering if there were any vegan pre-vet or vet students here? I'm currently a pre-vet student and was surprised to find a lack of other veg*ns in forums for pre-vet and veterinary students. Actually, what was really surprising was the absolute hostility and condescending remarks I encountered when I was asked why I want to be a veterinarian ("I'm vegan and I want a career where I can help animals.")

So, any pre-vet or vet students out there? Have you experienced any hostility from other students? What challenges have you had regarding veganism and your course of study?

Check out this article, I was interviewed by a Las Vegas journalist at this year's FanFaire!! =D (scroll halfway down to read)

Dreams and Fantasy Leave Nothing Taboo - Doug Elfman

FF was sooo much fun this year. I cant wait to get myself a sexy Siren mercenary when Seeds of Destruction comes out!!

Yeah, some success!

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 7:51 PM
Trying to create vegan meals for picky omnivore siblings with an anti-vegetarian mother can be hellish. I have the type of mom who believes that no meal is healthy without a side of meat and a glass of milk. Nonetheless, I do have some success from time to time. I once made yellow cupcakes which my oldest sister (eight years old) loved so much that she wanted me to make her birthday cake; I made a vegan cake that I decorated with strawberries in a rose pattern, and she and her friends gobbled it up. Then I brought my youngest sister (four) and brother (two) to my apartment to unpack my stuff and had a couple of failed meals before I served them some Amy's Chickenless Soup, and they both loved it. There may be hope yet.

What do you think about this idea?

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 7:42 PM
Hey,

Was wondering what you might think about this --

Basically, I want to put together a collection (anonymous allowed) stories about gaming experiences from girl gamers. I can offer editing on that (although help would be appreciated) and we'd donate the proceeds from the collection after costs to charity. I'd be 100% transparent and public about the project and the costs to show how it's doing.

Thoughts?

Could you please elaborate; what is the purpose of the project, how do you intend to publish it, and who do you expect to be the readership?

Purpose of the project: Confessions of a Part-Time Sorceress was recently put out by Wizards of the Coast. Inspired by the popularity of that project, the purpose of this collection would be to shine the spotlight not only on one girl gamer--but a good representation of several. The focus would be narrow to answer a specific question like "Why gaming?" or "What do you play?" but I'm open to suggestions.

Publishing Venues: Honestly, I have several options I can explore. As a freelancer in the RPG/tabletop industry there are a few publishers I might be able to shop something like this around for, provided I have the content to do it. The other option would be to start small through Lulu.com or a few other places until distribution gets large enough to go mainstream. I would have to do some research for that because I don't want to do this and have the funds mismanaged and not allocated to charity.

Readership: Depends on the hype, really. If the project would get mass distribution, a non-fiction book can get really great readership (25,000+). If it starts small, expect 2,500 at the max.

Invitro meat - better for the cause?

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 6:29 PM
I know this has been posted once before but there have been only several (about 10 or so) comments on it, and I’m really wondering what the majority of people think about the matter.

Headphones!

  • Aug. 18th, 2008 at 6:53 PM
Sooo I broke my headphones the other day and am in the market for new ones. One problem I've found is that apparently some/a lot are lined with leather. Does anyone know of any vegan-friendly headphones? I'm looking for big, dorky, noise-cancelling ones (that aren't too expensive), but I figure it'd be nice if folks could post anything and everything so that this can be a useful post to whoever might also be looking for some. I worded that awkwardly. Anyway thanks!
